Colt delivers special Select result
28 Jan 2015The only yearling by Tartan Bearer in the Select Sale made an impressive name for himself at Karaka today.
Offered by Hallmark Stud, he was the centre of attention during the session and the subject of spirited bidding. The impressive bay was finally knocked down for $525,000 to Thomas Li. This smashes the previous NZB Select Sale record of $300,000 set in 2008.
“There was heaps of interest in the colt, he was never in his box,” Mark Baker said. “He’s a lovely horse.”
He is out of the Galileo mare Pink Pier, also the dam of the Gr.2 Autumn Stakes winner and Group One performer Thunder Fantasy. The Gr 1 Ascot Coronation Stakes winner Rebecca Sharp also features on the pedigree page.
A well-established Hallmark family was also to the fore on the opening day of the Select Sale at Karaka. A son of Pins, he is a half-brother to the stakes winner and Group One performer San Bernardino. Their dam Miss Katella is a half-sister to the former champion sprinter-miler Gee I Jane and to Miss Jessie Jay. She is the mother of the Group One winners Katie Lee and Banchee. The well-related colt was knocked down for $42,500 to the bid of Te Akau.
Cambridge trainer Murray Baker took a shine to the Cape Blanco colt and signed for him at $37,500. Out of a Don Eduardo mare, he is from the family of the Gr 2 Brisbane Cup winner Floria.
